"Phew," the mayor huffed. "You're going to bury me, Andr\u00e9s. If you only knew how angry I get every time I walk through this door and you ask me my name when you're calling me by my name..."<\/p>\n
"Don Antonio, I don't think it will be that hard for you to say it. If you had to lift something heavy to do it... but you just have to say it." The boy said, flashing a wide smile.<\/p>\n
Okay, okay. I'm not going to argue with you about that. I'd lose no matter what. When you have a free moment, please come by my office.<\/p>\n
"Is something wrong, Don Antonio?" the boy asked, looking worried.<\/p>\n
"It always happens, Andr\u00e9s, but why would it be bad? Could it be that you're the bad one?" the mayor said slyly.<\/p>\n
"I'll be up in a little while," interrupted the boy, who wasn't at all interested in where the conversation was going.<\/p>\n
Around mid-morning, when the comings and goings after breakfast had all subsided, Andres\u00edn headed towards Don Antonio's office. Reluctantly, he trudged up the stairs; he was in no hurry. Who knew what the mayor wanted from him? "Nothing good," he muttered, covering his mouth, afraid someone might have overheard him.<\/p>\n
\u2013Knock, knock. Ahem, may I come in, Don Antonio? \u2013He asked, poking his big head between the leaves of the wooden door that secured his office.<\/p>\n
\u2013Come in Andr\u00e9s, come in.<\/p>\n
"You tell me. Don't dawdle, you know how sly they are in this House. I'm sure someone will take the opportunity to distance themselves for a while when they see me go up to their office.".<\/p>\n
\u2013Don't worry, Andr\u00e9s. Today, since it's a special day, we'll forgive him until you come down, okay?<\/p>\n
The boy shrugged and smiled.<\/p>\n
"Let's see," continued the mayor, "you've been working here for a year now and I've just found out that your salary is paid in cash at the Town Hall and not by transfer to a bank account like everyone else.".<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, Don Antonio,\u201d the boy interrupted, \u201cit\u2019s just that my mother and benches don\u2019t get along. Well, she does with the ones in the park. Every afternoon she eats a paper cone of sunflower seeds while gossiping with her friends on one of them. But she doesn\u2019t mean those, does she?\u201d<\/p>\n
Don Antonio's vision blurred for a few moments. Andres\u00edn was capable of interpreting things in a way that almost left his interlocutors stunned.<\/p>\n
"Of course not, Andr\u00e9s. Tomorrow you go to the bank and open an account so we can deposit the money there. Okay?"<\/p>\n
"The one in the park, Don Antonio? Ha, ha, ha," joked the boy. "Oops! Sorry, Don Antonio, I was just kidding. Tomorrow I'm going to the bank with my mother and we'll open the account.".<\/p>\n
The mayor, with a serious expression, nodded his head.<\/p>\n
\u2013Well, if you don't need anything else, I'll go back to my post. Goodbye, Don Antonio.<\/p>\n
\u2013Goodbye Andr\u00e9s. Please close the door on your way out.<\/p>\n
"Blomm!" The mayor closed his eyes and sighed. "Was that slam of the door really necessary?"<\/p>\n
The boy took the stairs three at a time, whistling some tune impossible to recognize until, suddenly, he stopped dead in his tracks at the bottom of the stairs. Something about his conversation with the mayor didn't add up.<\/p>\n
Don Antonio had lit a cigar to see if the smoke would relax him after the visit from his tormentor with his booming voice. But it was clear it wasn't his day. The doorbell rang again: "Knock, knock, knock. Do you give permission?" the boy asked, poking his generous head in once more. Don Antonio, almost choking on the smoke, nodded. "Cough, cough, cough... come in... cough, cough."<\/p>\n
"If you only knew how bad smoking is. That's what my mother says. In fact, my father used to complain when he woke up that his chest felt like a whistle factory. And that was from the tobacco.".<\/p>\n
"Now, Andr\u00e9s," the mayor interrupted, "I imagine you didn't leave your job unattended just to come and give me a lecture about how harmful tobacco is, did you?".<\/p>\n
\u2013Ah! That's it. There's a problem with going to the bank tomorrow. I can't go.<\/p>\n
\u2013Why? What do you mean you can't go? What's stopping you?<\/p>\n
"Well, that's clear, Don Antonio. The bank and the City Hall have the same hours, so I can't go. My position would remain unfilled.".<\/p>\n
The mayor didn't know whether to admire the boy's responsibility towards his work or jump out the window.<\/p>\n
"Don't worry. At half past eleven, when everyone has returned from breakfast, you and your mother can go to the bench and I'll take your place. Does that sound good?"<\/p>\n
The boy ran out of arguments and shrugged. "Okay, tomorrow at eleven thirty then." He turned away, and before Don Antonio could open his mouth\u2026<\/p>\n
\u2013Blomm! \u2013door slammed.<\/p>\n
\u2013Good heavens! This creature is going to outlive me. What an animal!<\/p>\n
He skipped down the steps again, and this time, when he reached the landing, his heart skipped a beat \u2013 "And who will replace Don Antonio?" \u2013 Without wasting a second, he headed back towards the councilman's office.<\/p>\n
\u2013Knock, knock, knock. May I come in?<\/p>\n
"Good heavens!" exclaimed the mayor, looking up at the ceiling. "What have I ever done to deserve this, sir? And now, what's gotten into you?"<\/p>\n
"Me?" he said, clutching his swollen belly with a panicked expression. "Where, Don Antonio? Do I have blood, Don Antonio? I don't feel any pain, Don Antonio.".<\/p>\n
"Stop it, Andr\u00e9s! Are you doing this on purpose? You're driving me crazy! And you're going to ruin my reputation!"<\/p>\n
"Of course, since it's not his guts, he doesn't care," the young man said, continuing to feel his stomach.<\/p>\n
"Andr\u00e9s, calm down! It's just a figure of speech. Your stomach's fine. As always. About to burst, but fine." The boy stared at him, still shaken. "Why are you lying to me, Don Antonio? Do you know how scared you made me?"<\/p>\n
\u2013Nothing compared to the two you gave me by slamming the door like a brute.<\/p>\n
"So, are we tied?" the boy said with a wide smile plastered on his face.<\/p>\n
\u2013Yes, Andr\u00e9s, yes. We're tied.<\/p>\n
The young boy smiled at him \u2013What did Don Antonio want?<\/p>\n
"Me?" the mayor exclaimed. "You're the one who's knocked on the door three times in less than twenty minutes. What do you want?"<\/p>\n
\u2013Oh, that's right. I got so flustered with my stomach aches that I was trying to tell you I won't be able to go to the bank tomorrow at 11:30.<\/p>\n
\u2013Are you going on about the same thing again? But I told you I'd take your place. Me personally. The mayor will act as doorman, substitute, whatever is needed tomorrow. What's the problem?<\/p>\n
\u2013Well, you see. If I go to the bank and you take my place, who will take your place? I can't because I'll be at the bank.<\/p>\n
Completely defeated, the mayor stared at the floor, looked up, and his vision blurred as he reached the ceiling. He even had to shake his head several times to snap back to reality. Something as simple as opening a bank account was turning into a nightmare.<\/p>\n
"Andr\u00e9s, don't worry anymore, please. I'll tell my secretary to put a table by the front door, and I'll stand in for you and act as mayor. Does that sound good? Now get out of here and don't show your face in this office again, not even if the town hall is on fire.".<\/p>\n
\u2013Very well, Don Antonio. I'll come by tomorrow then.<\/p>\n
And with that, he turned on his heels, left the office and\u2026 \u2013Blomm! another door slammed.
\nThe mayor turned red with anger when the door suddenly opened again.<\/p>\n
"Excuse me, Don Antonio, I accidentally closed the door." And she left, closing it very carefully.<\/p>\n
The councilman went from red to white and a slight dizziness took hold of his head, to the point that he had to sit down to recover.<\/p>\n
The rest of the morning passed without incident. The employees of the House left on time, and the last to leave, as always, was Andres\u00edn, engrossed in a large bag of pork rinds, which were his weakness.<\/p>\n
A quarter of an hour before half past eleven, Tomasa would appear at the Town Hall door. She was more than punctual and always arrived a little before the agreed time.<\/p>\n
Holding her son's arm, something Andres\u00edn didn't like because he was embarrassed, saying it was something old women did, they arrived at the Priests' Bank. That was the name by which the only bank branch in the village was known.<\/p>\n
The director himself came out to greet them, having been previously warned by Don Antonio of the peculiar visit he was about to receive.<\/p>\n
The director, Don Salva, although almost everyone affectionately called him Salvi because of his almost two meters in height and his one hundred and fifty kilos in weight, was a man very fond of jokes and he found that warning from his friend the mayor, in a way, seductive.<\/p>\n
"Andr\u00e9s, right?" She addressed the boy, shaking his hand. "And you must be Tomasa, his mother.".<\/p>\n
"That's right, Don Salva," the mother agreed.<\/p>\n
\u2013They tell me from the City Hall that you have to open an account so that they can directly deposit your salary and make the transfer every month.<\/p>\n
If there had been a fly in the office, it would have flown into Andres\u00edn's mouth, and if not, into his mother's. Both of them were hearing words for the first time that sounded like Chinese to them: "direct debit," "transfer," "payroll"... They were in another world.<\/p>\n
"Okay, I need both of your ID cards and you can sign these slips of paper with the cross on them." Handing them the forms, he thought his friend Don Antonio was exaggerating and that the whole operation was a piece of cake.<\/p>\n
"You're an expert at crossbreeding too, I see, aren't you?" the boy said, smiling.<\/p>\n
"Excuse me?" the director asked, taken aback.<\/p>\n
"I forgive you," Andres\u00edn replied with a broad smile. "Although I don't think you've done anything to me.".<\/p>\n
\u2013No Andr\u00e9s, I mean I didn't understand you about the crosses.<\/p>\n
\u2013Ahhh, that's it. My job is a bit like yours. To begin with, we put a cross on it. \u2013And she gave him her irresistible smile again.<\/p>\n
"Probably." The director interrupted, slightly annoyed by the joke and the way it had made him look somewhat ridiculous. "You'll also need a card to withdraw money from the ATM, okay?".<\/p>\n
"What? You're saying some really strange things, and I've been lost for a while now. But I'm sure my mother has found out.".<\/p>\n
Tomasa turned her head sharply. "Me?"<\/p>\n
\u2013Look, Mom. There are three of us. Don Salva, who's not on the account and isn't family, me, who hasn't heard a thing, and you. So, if you haven't heard anything, we're in trouble.<\/p>\n
\u2013Well son, I haven't heard anything about it either. If you want, we can leave this bank business and stay as we were.<\/p>\n
The director thought to himself what a pair of characters he had before him and that now he understood Don Antonio's warning.<\/p>\n
"Okay. I'll explain it again; it's very simple, but we have to get the calculation done because the City Hall has requested it." After repeating it four or five times, Andres\u00edn seemed to understand, which greatly relieved Don Salva, who was beginning to feel somewhat defeated. "All that remains is to discuss the commissions.".<\/p>\n
"Does 'commissions' come from eating?" the boy interrupted. "Then I'm going to..."
\nliking this account thing more.<\/p>\n
Don Salva couldn't believe his eyes. "Did mother and son conspire to pull his leg?"<\/p>\n
\u2013No Andr\u00e9s, no. That's what you have to pay the bank for having the money here.<\/p>\n
"What? I'm simple but stupid, no, I don't want to have the money in the bank, the City Council is forcing me to. I prefer to get paid in cash like I have been, and not have it cost me anything.".<\/p>\n
"Well said, son!" exclaimed Tomasa. "That's robbery! Let's go!"<\/p>\n
\u2013And grabbing her skirt, she put her hands on her hips with a grumpy face.<\/p>\n
"Calm down, please," suggested the director, looking astonished.<\/p>\n
"It's not theft, it's normal. We take care of your money, we process your payments, and we have an ATM available for you whenever you need to withdraw cash.".<\/p>\n
That fortunate explanation seemed to calm Tomasa's nerves, and, "unwinding" her stance, she took her seat again.<\/p>\n
\u2013Well, as I was saying, I need to inform you about the fees you will have to pay\u2026<\/p>\n
"Fertilize?" the boy interrupted again. "Ummm, are you serious? Fertilize like they do in the fields around the vines?" The director had already realized that this young man could come up with something unexpected and simply continued with his task.<\/p>\n
\u2013Similar, except it involves paying. That is, paying is the same as making a payment.
\nDon Salva explained.<\/p>\n
"Well, the truth is I don't understand it. When Frasquito goes to fertilize the vineyard, he doesn't exactly pay anything. He simply pours the mule manure onto the soil so that it will produce well. I don't understand him.".<\/p>\n
"Exactly!" the director replied. "Same thing. You pay into your account so everything runs smoothly. The difference is, instead of using manure, you use pesetas.".<\/p>\n
"Ahhh, if you say so," the boy replied.<\/p>\n
\u2013Yes, and you'll also have to pay for account and card maintenance. Five thousand pesetas every three months.<\/p>\n
"Just a moment, Mr. Director," Tomasa said. "With all due respect, do you really think we're interested in having a bank account just so you and everyone else who works here can earn a good salary?"<\/p>\n

That argument was beyond doubt, so Tomasa and Andres\u00edn signed the corresponding papers. The boy's name was surrounded by a multitude of crisscrossing lines, and his mother's fingerprint was inked. He never had the chance to go to school.<\/p>\n
The director breathed a sigh of relief when they said their goodbyes after signing the agreement. He leaned back in his armchair, trying to relax, until suddenly a loud bang startled him. "Blomm!" Andres\u00edn had closed the door as usual and slammed it shut with a resounding bang.<\/p>\n
\u2013Now I understand what he meant and what Don Antonio warned me about. He's earned his place in heaven.<\/p>\n
\u2013Knock, knock, knock. \u2013Do you give your permission, Don Salva? \u2013 asked the boy, poking his generous head out.<\/p>\n
\u2013Tell me, tell me, is something wrong?<\/p>\n
Andres\u00edn smiled because he remembered something Don Antonio had told him the day before. "Don Salva, things always happen, but it doesn't have to be bad." And he gave him a broad smile. "Just two things. One, please excuse the slamming door; my hand slipped. And the other, when you have a chance, please send me some photos of the account.".<\/p>\n
Don Salva paled. What on earth was that kid asking him for? A photo of the account?<\/p>\n
"A photo of the account, Andr\u00e9s?" she asked, her eyes wide.<\/p>\n
\u2013Yes, of course, Don Salva. With all that maintenance, my house must be beautiful. I'm sure it has spectacular gardens, a swimming pool, and views of the mountains.<\/p>\n
The director, white as a sheet, sat down in his chair, visibly defeated.<\/p>\n
-Ha ha ha. \u2013 Rio Andres\u00edn.<\/p>\n
"Don't worry. There's no rush. With the number of accounts at the bank, I imagine they won't send them to me right away. As you can see, I just arrived. I'll stop by another day and ask. Have a good day." And closing the door carefully, she left the bank.<\/p>\n
