Primitive Man's Workshop

Primitive Man's Workshop

Explora Natura held the Primitive Man workshop on November 7, 2015, an open house for primary school children at its strategic location for holding camps in the Posada La Niña Margarita, Nestled in the incomparable setting of the Sierras Subbéticas, which offer us the most beautiful views between the foothills of the Sierra Horconera and Pico Bermejo.

The children had a wonderful time while practicing manipulative skills, psychomotor skills, developing their competencies and values such as knowledge of artisan trades, stimulating creativity and emphasizing camaraderie and values education with respect and attention to diversity in our workshops.

For this, we had the presence of all the members of Explora Natura who, with their knowledge, enthusiasm and professionalism, spent an incredible day with the children whose parents placed all their trust in us.

We know these children, who are now raving about our workshops, constantly talking about us and wanting to repeat them as soon as possible. That's our greatest satisfaction, and rest assured we'll soon be offering them again for other age groups.

Socio-educational intervention in the form of these workshops is fundamental for us to the full development of their abilities and serves as an indispensable complement to formal education, since children learn not only in school, but outside of it in all areas of non-formal educational activity that puts into practice the knowledge acquired in books.

Our content is adapted to the ages and our objectives are clearly defined in accordance with the acquisition of the skills set out in the educational curriculum for each stage.

The evaluation of our workshops is continuous and formative, so we not only evaluate the results, but the entire process and ourselves, since we are responsible for the success of our sessions.

In this case, the common thread or theme of the day was PRIMITIVE MAN.

Now that the oldest remains of our ancestors, called Homo naledi, have been found—whose morphology could be placed between the genera Australopithecus and Homo—it seems we are finally getting closer to the missing link. This link emerges from the burials and rituals that even the earliest Homo possessed the capacity for abstraction, symbolism, and a concern for honoring and protecting their dead. Explora Natura is increasingly holding its workshop on early humans, which we call, with a nod to our main area of operation, Homo subbeticus. Our children learn about their origins through our teaching methods and hands-on activities.

The day on November 7, 2015, was for about twenty children between the ages of 9 and 12 who wanted to have a good time in the great outdoors, doing "things" that children don't usually do these days, far from mobile phones, video game consoles, tablets...

During the primitive man workshop, the children took a step back in history, and, emulating primitive man, they built an underground oven with the help of their instructors. Inside, they roasted chicken breasts wrapped in leaves and reeds to keep them from getting covered in dirt.

While they were roasting, a workshop on pigments and decorating garden stones was held, just as the oldest artists of the Subbetic region did. In this way, they learned how primitive man used fire and the vital importance of this event for the development of Homo; how they gave free rein to their curiosity and captured the world around them through cave art; and they developed their creativity by painting with their fingers, after making pigments from plant materials on stones they had also collected.

Before lunch, during recreation and rest time, the monitors and children had fun playing popular games and enjoyed an interpretive excursion around the surroundings.

After lunch, a pleasant basket-weaving workshop gave them the opportunity to develop their skills and psychomotor abilities, while also highlighting the value of increasingly rare artisanal crafts. Another workshop, this time on baking, involved making milk sticks, a typical local sweet, and delighted the participants with the chance to get their hands dirty and then enjoy their own creations.

Parents and children had a wonderful time as the parents were also invited to eat paella, have a drink at the Posada La Niña Margarita beach bar and enjoy botanical trails and excursions around the inn.

Explora Natura is defined by a clear educational purpose and a commitment to children and nature, knowing that they enjoy learning and that the results are meaningful for them and, of course, for us. We foster values of care and respect for the environment through interaction between children, adults, and nature, because the very essence of Environmental Education is to know in order to love and respect. The workshop on primitive man emphasizes this same idea. We awaken curiosity to encourage critical thinking and coherence between reflection and practice. We believe that future generations will have enough information to better care for our planet, our environment, and the relationships among living beings.
