Environmental care activities for children (I)

Hello everyone! We are preparing a series of posts with activities about caring for the environment for boys and girls in the early stages of development.

Although environmental education prepares us to take care of and help protect nature, this series of entries is more specific, as it will address environmental care from a different perspective.

Teaching children from their earliest stages of development is important so they become aware that caring for the environment is fundamental. Furthermore, they are building lifelong habits that can potentially drastically change the future of our planet. It's no small matter.

The activities and resources we will present include methods for reducing waste and garbage, information on consumption, tips on recycling, information on pollution and its effects on the environment, statistics on global warming, and a lot of student projects that can be completed inside and outside the classroom.

Environmental care activities for children: Composting

Use these resources to teach kids how to help the environment.

  • Making a compost bin:
    • First, make a huge pile of leaves and spend some time jumping on them together. This isn't going to improve the compost formula in any way, but a little exercise is always good. Playing in leaves might be one of the best activities for kids to do in autumn (and for adults too).
    • To make a handmade "soilerium"
The best composting activity to do with children is making actual compost. This activity is perfect because children can witness the decomposition process firsthand. The results are equally delicious, and an added benefit is the lifelong knowledge gained. The supplies we need are:

      • A wide-mouthed glass jar.
      • Organic waste remnants: peels and cores of fruit and vegetables, newspaper scraps, waste of any kind as long as it is organic.
      • Rainwater.
      • The soil is mixed with plant remains and water and left to act for a while.

Can an environmental education activity be made cheaper and simpler?
